Mayor Jenderal J.H.R. Kohler, pemimpin pasukan Belanda yang pertama kali mendarat di Aceh pada tanggal 6 April 1873. Pada tanggal 10 April pasukan Belanda merebut Mesjid Raya, tetapi karena tekanan - tekanan yang diberikan oleh pejuang - pejuang Aceh, pada malam itu juga mereka terpaksa mundur.
Pada tanggal 14 April Belanda mengerahkan seluruh kekuatannya untuk merebutnya kembali dan berhasil pula menduduki Mesjid Raya, akan tetapi pada hari itu juga Kohler tewas karena tembakan penembak mahir pejuang Aceh sehingga seluruh rencana penyerbuan Belanda menjadi berantakan dan mereka mengundurkan diri.

Ucapan Kohler yang terkenal pada saat-saat maut merenggut jiwanya: "0, God, ik ben getroffen!"("Ya Tuhan, aku terkena peluru!")

Major General J.H.R. Kohler, Commander of the Dutch troops which landed in Aceh for the first time on April 6, 1873. On April 10 the Dutch troops succeeded in taking over Mesjid Raya (Grand Mosque), but at that very night they were forced to withdraw due to the fierce counterattack of the Acehnese fighters   
On April 14, the Dutch dispatched their whole force to recapture the mosque, and they succeeded again. However, on that same day General Kohler was shot dead by an Acehnese sharpshooter. This made the whole plans of the Dutch fall apart and forced them to withdraw

Kohler's famousj words toward the end of his life: "0, God ik ben getroffen" ("0, God, I am hit")
